Is Uphill free?
Yes. The test, your results and your trend are free, with unlimited retests.
Uphill Pro adds the adaptive plan, sessions, cardio age and reports. Pro is a yearly or one-off lifetime purchase. There's no trial, because the test is free for good.
What do I need to take the test?
- A treadmill that goes up to a 5% incline. You walk 4 min on the flat, then 4 min at 5%, at the same speed, somewhere between 3.2 and 7.2 km/h.
- Your iPhone, with Uphill.
- A way to read your heart rate: Apple Watch, a watch, band or chest strap that sends heart rate over Bluetooth, or AirPods Pro 3. No sensor? You can type your heart rate in by hand instead.
Which heart rate devices work?
- Bluetooth chest straps and armbands.
- Watches and bands that can broadcast heart rate, such as Garmin watches. Turn on heart rate broadcasting in the device's settings or its own app.
- Apple Watch works: the Uphill app on your watch opens when a test or session starts on your iPhone, sends your live heart rate, and taps your wrist when you leave your zone.
- AirPods Pro 3, through Apple Health. Wear both, and allow Apple Health once in Profile › Heart rate.
Chest straps and armbands are usually more accurate than wrist sensors.
My heart rate device does not show up.
- Turn on heart rate broadcasting (sometimes called heart rate sharing or sensor mode) on the watch, band or strap.
- Keep it within about a metre of your iPhone, and make sure it is awake.
- Close other apps or devices that are connected to it.
- Check Bluetooth is allowed for Uphill in your iPhone's Settings.
- AirPods: in Settings › Health › Data Access & Devices › Uphill, turn on Workouts and Heart Rate. Keep both in, and wait up to 30 s for the first reading.
Still nothing? Type your readings instead. The test works the same way.
How accurate is the result?
Uphill uses a published, validated walking test (Ebbeling et al., 1991). In the study that checked it, 20 of 22 estimates were within 5 ml/kg/min of a laboratory measurement. Your own result can differ from a lab test by about that much.
Your trend across repeat tests is more reliable than any one result. For results you can compare, test at the same time of day, on the same treadmill, at the same speed. Medication that lowers your heart rate, such as beta blockers, makes the estimate read higher.
The result is an estimate, not a diagnosis.
How do I cancel, or ask for a refund?
Apple handles both.
- To cancel Uphill Pro yearly: on your iPhone, open Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, then Uphill. A lifetime purchase is one-off, so there is nothing to cancel.
- To ask for a refund: use Apple's Report a Problem page.
Once you have Pro, Profile › Membership in the app also has Manage subscription and Request a refund.
How do I restore my purchase?
In the app, go to Profile › Membership, or open the Uphill Pro screen, and tap Restore purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought Pro with.
Where is my data kept, and how do I delete it?
On your iPhone, in Uphill's own storage, and in Apple Health if you allow it. There is no account and no server, so we never see it.
To delete it, go to Profile › Apple Health and data › Delete all my data. Deleting the app does the same. Anything Uphill saved to Apple Health stays there until you remove it in the Health app.
